grafting onto harrisia hybrid

We tried these graftings today with 5 mm seedlings. this stock is very used in japan and thailand, but have you got info about it?
Does it work well without putting any weight on the scion?

I don't really know for harrisia hybrids but  I know, with my experience grafting on H. jusbertii, that some weight is needed. Concerning the time it takes to root... I agree it takes a bit longer, but it is a lot better at least under Chilean weather conditions

That is an interesting Harrissia hybrid stock C+D. I also haven't seen it before but I agree with Victor that scions that size nearly always need something to hold them down or else they will peel off as they dry. If that happens you can always redo the graft as long as the scions haven't dried too much.
On a similar but different topic, I remember you guys showed a Harrisia stock with no spines once on the old forum. Did you ever propagate that stock or grow it to big size for flowers and seeds? It was very interesting.

Hello Simon, these are propagation of that stock, I found the old photo:



the plant didn't flowewr yet and these are only clones.
it's the first time we use as stock and we'll keep you updated on the results.

we removed the grafts from the a closed box with high humidity some days ago.
now the seedlings seem to be well attached (not all of them but the majority).
It seems with ariocarpus it works better.
we'll post some photos, but the plants need to make roots before seeing if the grafts work really.

Don't you have problems with orange fungus attacs on the harrisia cut-surface, when you place them in a high-humidity room?

We have sometimes some problems with harrisia that makes brown/black spots on the cut surface.
Sometimes we dry the surface with a paper before the grafting.
This time we did not have any problems, excluding that the ario seedlings were a bit old and we cut on the taproot, so some soil remianed and the cut are not perfectly clean. seedlings are about 4-5 months old and they alreday have about 2 cm long taproot.

Looks that this hybrid is well known in Thailand, I bought one Vtype superkabuto, and it was grafted on same hybrid stock. looks like hybrid of E.jusbertii x Selenicereus (or Hylocereus)

plants are well rooted now, and we noticed that if they are younger they root better than old ones (some bigger plants grafted on this stock if cut, they need time to make new roots). the problem is weather is not very warm here and I think we need to wait for next spring to see a new growth, or another solution will be to keep them under artificial light.

Performing this kind of graft do you still need to put the scion slightly off-set ?
Where is the vascular ring in this kind of stock ?

Yes, if made on rooted cuttings and in the right period they should pump up quickly.
The vascular bound are on the middle, about 2-3 mm diameter.
We are used to put them with a light offset, but in this case they are almost in the middle.

Very good results indeed!
A few questions: did you get the seeds or some cuttings of that stock? Is it hard to find? Does it work with bigger scions (if someone already tried)? Is it winter resistant?
