Pollen donor dominates?
« on: Tuesday, 17 September 2013 - 10:46:17 »
I have heard and read from different sources as in case of Astrophytums, the pollen donor has a stronger influence on the offspring. I have been pretty sceptic so far as I can not see what could be the reason. But my this year's crosses also hint that this may be true: Astrophytum myriostigma 'Kikko Koh-Yo' X 'Onzuka tricostatum' seedlings do look much like Onzuka trico seedlings and seedlings from the vice versa cross do not show the typical for Onzuka seedlings hairiness. Instead, they seem to have some chlorophyll deficiency. I do not think at all that I swapped the labels through an oversight (though I have to admit that principally, it may have happened).

This is how the seedlings of Kikko Koh-Yo X Onzuka look like now, several days after germination:

And here are the seedlings of the vice versa cross:

I would have expected the things to be the other way around - at least some chlorophyll deficiency in case of Kikko Koh-Yo seedlings and hairiness in case of Onzuka seedlings...
