Hello,
It is not really normal but it is not really rare either. In my experience some plants of this species will do multiple flowers or offsets from an areole, also I have seen combinations of offsets and flowers, multiple areoles on a tubercle, groove like areoles and crested flowers.
With such strange variable anatomy I hope it won't be long till enough of these have been grown that there will be some interesting monstrose forms available.
