How long for a myrio kikko?
« on: Friday, 30 December 2011 - 03:48:43 »
Hello!!
Do you know how long will take to apear kikko character?
A few months ago I sowed a lot of kikko seeds for the first time but I still can't see anyone with characteristic kikko ribs.
Since this is my first time sowing kikko I don't know what to expect.
I didn't graft. All seedlings own roots and about 1.5cm.
I would like to know your opinion. I don't know if I should discard the seedlings or wait a little longer.

Thank you!!

depends on the quality of seeds. some can start to show signs at 5 cm minimum.
but if they don't show any kind of kikko sign in a year from now, you will not obtain well marked plants...

Thank you for your help!!
Most of the seeds comes from my own kikkos.
I did several crossings:
kikko x trico
trico x kikko
kikko nudum x kikko kohyo
fukuryou nudum x kikko nudum

There're a few seedlings that look somehow different. The lines conecting one areole to the next areole is a straight line instead of a seamless curve like the regular myriostigma. But since I've never seen a young kikko seedling, I don't know what to look for.

For last 3 year I've done a lot of cross-pollinations and usually 5% shows fantastic results from the very beginning (new forms, unusual colours etc.), 10-20% shows good results (features of both mother-father plants) next year, 50% shows weak results in 2-3 years, 20% - simple forms, nothing special.

Usually I keep only plants which has shown interesting forms by the age of 1 year...
