Echinocactus texensis cv. Ooyanami
« on: Sunday, 02 June 2013 - 19:49:14 »
Hello,

I bought some seeds of Echinocactus texensis cv. Ooyanami some years ago, and they flowered for the first time.
You can see them below (only the 2 bigger plants. The 3 small ones are the classic species).

However, I wonder what is this cultivar? What means "Ooyanami"?
The plants are still young, but do not seem to have anything special compared to the classic species.

I googled this name, but no luck. This topic will probably become the first result soon :-P

Thanks for your help :)

Hello Yann, as usual you show us very beautiful plants! How Mikey I also do not know this CV. At first glance it does not seem different from natural plant, but I could be wrong!

Hi Yann,
i've just seen this topic since i am new on the forum.
Based on my knowledge i think there is a typing mistake regarding this "cultivar". The correct word should be "ayanami" instead of "ooyanami". Ayanami is just the japanese name for normal echinocactus texensis. That's why you dont see any special characteristics since it's the normal plant. It is ホマロセファラ in japanese.

hey Mikey,
I don't know japanese - in the past i was trying to find some japanese cultivars of echinocactus horizonthalonius, so that's how i learned some names especially for echinocactus genus.
But of course i can try to translate the names you have in mind  ;D
So let me know when you post them.
